It was founded on the summit and slopes of a volcanic hill at the southern end of the region called Troas in ancient times, opposite the island of Lesbos. It is important for the history of philosophy because Aristotle, one of the great thinkers of the Ancient Age, lived in this city for three years and founded a philosophy school. Assos was also visited by Paul and the city is therefore considered sacred by Christians. The most striking place of this city, which was founded in 900 BC, is the Doric Temple of Athena built at the top. The city also has a large amphitheater. Today, the city of Behramkale, at the foothills and slopes of the mountain where the city is located, is still active.
